Michelin Warranty Tire Sidewall Crack
I'm just concerned as the chains often suggest repairs solely for increased sales. He was fast to mention the tire sale they have going on right now. Seems convenient. All in all they want about $500 for tires, alignment, and the poly belt.
I took a look at the tires myself, and they all do have hairline cracks on the sides of the treads. However, three of the tires are less than two years old and one is about a year old. I also had my dad take a look at the tires, and he didn't think the cracks were serious. He also looked at the poly belt and it felt completely smooth as he ran his fingers and fingernails over it. I need a tire rotation anyway, so I'll take it to an independent shop for a second opinion.
I am going on a trip in the next two weeks. Eight hour drive round trip. Is it something I should be concerned about?
Michelin Tires Cracking Between Treads
For years, people have relied on tread depth to determine when to replace a tire. If the tread passes the 'penny test,' they assume the tire still has life, regardless of how old it is, which can be a fatal mistake. Old tires are dangerous, regardless of tread depth. While there's no federally sanctioned safety guidance on when a tire is too old to be safe, many carmakers recommend replacement at six years from the date of manufacture.
Old tires have been the culprit in fatal accidents. Here are just two examples:
In 2008, the owner of a 1998 Ford Explorer in Georgia needed a new tire for his SUV and bought a used one. When he was driving two weeks later, the tread suddenly separated from the tire. The Explorer went out of control and hit a motorcycle, killing its rider. An analysis of the used tire revealed that it was nearly 10 years old.
In a more recent and high-profile example, the investigation into the cause of the 2013 accident that killed the actor Paul Walker revealed that the Porsche Carrera GT in which he was riding had 9-year-old tires. The California Highway Patrol noted that the tires' age might have compromised their drivability and handling characteristics, according to the Los Angeles Times.

- When it comes to determining the age of a tire, it is easy to identify when a tire was manufactured by reading its Tire Identification Number (often referred to as the tire's serial number). Unlike vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and the serial numbers used on many other consumer goods.

We have sidewall cracking on all outside mounted tires (Michlin tires 255/80R22.5 XRV (DOT B6H6 AK3X 3805)). Crack depths average approx. 5/64'(1.9844mm) determined by inserting the corner of a paper strip into cracks, scribing the paper with fine point pencil against the sidewall & measuring marked depth with a micrometer. The rubber loses its flexibility and begins to crack at the surface, and the structure becomes more and more brittle (think of a really old rubber band), leading to sidewall damage and eventual.
